Four Ways You Can Make an Impact on your Fraternity as an Alum

Membership in a fraternity or sorority is a commitment that offers lasting rewards, and what better way to say thank you to the organization that gave you so much than to give back Whether college graduation was five days or five decades ago, you don’t have to say goodbye to Greek life once you’ve left campus. In the day-to-day hustle, it might feel like you don’t have time to be involved with your former fraternity, or you want to reconnect but don’t know where to start. Well, here are four tips to help you strengthen your impact as an alum.

Serve as an advisor

Becoming a chapter advisor is a great way to share what you know with the next generation of leaders. If you’re interested in serving as an advisor, contact a current chapter advisor, fraternity president or your national headquarters. Each organization has different procedures for advisor recruitment, selection and training. Keep in mind that depending on which officer or officers you advise, your time commitment will vary.

Join an alumni chapter in your area

Your international and national headquarters has information on alumni chapters near you. Once you have located a chapter nearby, contact a member of the alumni chapter to find out how to join and when they host events. If you can’t find a chapter in your area, consider starting one! A virtual alumni chapter provides another option for involvement and a way to connect with alums across the country and around the world.

Visit for an alumni weekend or Homecoming

Check out your school’s alumni association website for more information on events and how to be involved as an alum. If your schedule permits, you can take the opportunity to help with planning alumni events that are tied in with a school function like a football game. A reunion tailgate is one idea. You can help lay the groundwork by sending invites to get other alumni involved.

Use social media to engage

Although it may sound obvious, considering that you’re probably already using platforms like Facebook or LinkedIn to connect with friends from college, it might be helpful to consider how you are utilizing social media to stay linked to your chapter. For example, joining a chapter Facebook group is a good way to stay in the know or find information on upcoming happenings that might be of interest, such as a football game, community service event or simply a get-together at your local sports bar.  Twitter and Instagram are other useful platforms that allow you to build bridges with your fellow alums, connect to events and interact on relevant subjects.
