Delta Tau Delta Keeps it Personal and Sees Results

Regular, targeted and personalized communication with alumni groups is a key to keeping a relationship strong after members have moved on from their collegiate Greek life. When Delta Tau Delta at Kenyon College in Ohio tugged on reader heartstrings with the very personal story of an alum in urgent need of a kidney, they took their alumni communications to the next level.

In their 2019 end-of-year newsletter, Delta Tau Delta included alumni updates, invitations to connect with Brothers in 2020 and memories of years past. But the most impactful article was a small plea written by John Emens ’83.

Emens ’83 told his storied history in fewer than 150 words. A college professor for 25 years, Emens ’83 fell and shattered his ankle in 2015. His injury became infected, resulting in the loss of his leg. Antibiotics used in his treatment had a significant, harmful impact on his kidneys. Now, his kidneys are failing and he is on dialysis and seeking a living kidney donor.

“I am at this time seeking a living kidney donor. I am compatible with blood types A & O. Anyone interested in helping me by being a living kidney donor please contact Ohio State Transplant at: 800-293-8965. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to me directly,” Emens ’83 writes.

This Brother’s plea personalized the newsletter in a special way. It brought in over $2,000 in donations in less than an hour, because it called alumni to attention and motivated them to support the Chapter that binds them all together in a way nothing else can. It was a stark reminder that, as Brothers, they rely on and support one another through all of life’s ups, downs and unexpected turns.
