Can You Answer Important Questions from Your Donors

If you’re planning to have a face-to-face meeting with a major donor, it’s important to anticipate the questions they might ask. It’s just as important to do this every time you ask any donor for a contribution, regardless of their capacity. Your ability to be proactive in answer your donors most pressing questions can help you achieve better results.

Whether you’re sitting down with a donor or sitting down to write your next appeal letter or email, it’s critical to think about your solicitation from the donor’s perspective. It’s common in a non-profit environment to become focused on internal needs and the needs you fulfill as an organization. Remember that donors are parting with their resources in order to help you succeed, and their needs matter, too. Before you ask, make sure you are answering these key questions:

  • Were my past gifts used wisely? Did they make an impact?
  • How can my future gifts make an impact?
  • Who is benefitting from my gift?
  • How much are you asking for?
  • What’s the best way for me to contribute?
  • Why is this money needed RIGHT NOW?
  • How soon are you going to ask me for money again?

Being proactive about providing the answers to these questions can put donors at ease and give them confidence in your organization’s ability to make a difference with their contributions—especially if they understand not only WHY you need their support, but why you need it NOW.
